Awards Season

No, I have not given up designing nor have I given up on the challenge I have undertaken. Over the past few weeks I have been trying something new w.r.t my designs. As most of you know I am extremely inspired by movies and right now its the Awards season in both Hollywood and Bollywood. So, I am trying my hand at red carpet creations.

This is the most difficult designing I have done so far. When I first began designing these dresses, they were super crappy. I wanted to design dresses that were unique and that were not seen on red carpet before. But one after the other each dress I designed seemed like it would earn a place on the 'Worst Dressed' list.

So for the first time I did some research (I know I should do it more often) on what should go into designing a elaborate garment. The answer was form, function and structure. With this knowledge and multiple visits to eonline's fashion police, I figured that using plain colors to depict red carpet creations was not adequately representing the form or the structure. I needed texture and patterns. With some new plug ins in my open source paint.net I was ready to go...

This is still not my best attempt at designing, but I have put up my progression. From the crappy red carpet dresses to some what decent designs. Please leave comments on what you think.

Design 5 for Sorority Life Contest

This design is inspired by a Rangoli. The twists and turns south Indian women portray on the ground with their chalk powder have always fascinated me. I have tried to twist lines the same way a Rangoli does. I did not succeed entirely, but this is still a cute ensemble for summer.

Design 4 for Sorority Life Contest

Valentines Day is round the corner, and this is my dream Red dress that I would like to wear on this day that is apparently filled with love. The fabric here is supposed to be chiffon or anything like it, which is free flowing and non restrictive. The use of checks was give my latest obsession (checks) a place on Valentines day.

Design 3 for Sorority Life Contest

This design was inspired by the latest issue of Vogue magazine which has a small article on futuristic body hugging clothes. Most of the designs listed in the article wear metallic coloured. Some of them depicted varying shades of black and white. Although I loved the designs, I refused to believe that future is all about dark/metallic colours. I would like all the colours in the rainbow have a chance in the future. Hence, this design.

Design 2 for Sorority Life Contest

Julia Roberts dress for the Golden Globes this year was the inspiration for this. Her dress was too casual for a dressed up event like Golden Globes, but it would have been perfect for a relaxing evening out at a beach. This dress is supposed to be resort/beach wear.

Black but colourful jacket

Ok there is a lot going on in this jacket, and yes it will be difficult to pair it with anything. I know cos I tried pairing it with pants, skirts in this sketch and nothing worked, but this is a statement piece. It is going to attract a lot of attention, some good some bad. If you are one of those who want to be the centre of attention where ever you go.. then wear this.

Here comes the librarian

A Puffy Ball gown

If you were Cinderella, what would you wear to the ball? That was my thinking behind creating this outfit. The outfit is meant to make you look pretty and feel like a princess. The petal pattern on the gown is inspired by what Miley Cyrus wore last year to the Oscar Awards. The reason for the color is that I have not seen many ball gowns in this shade of purple.

Roller Derby chick outfit...

Ok, its not really a Roller derby chick outfit...its a little more fitted and I also tried to make it more stylish. But this outfit is inspired by the movie 'Whip it,' Drew Barrymore's directorial debut. This movie makes the roller skating chick look soooo cool that I had to create an outfit for this blue haired kick-ass heroine who drops out of a beauty pageant to join a roller derby team.

Take a look and also check out the movie if you are into sports movies which inspire you to follow your heart no matter what you want to do with your life.

This is resolution #1 for this year... following my heart even if it seems difficult to do so sometimes.
